Jonathan Chait:

Longtime readers know that I’ve been continually puzzled by the Washington press corps’ insistence on treating Haley Barbour as a plausible presidential nominee. The idea of nominating the physical embodiment of the worst stereotypes of the Republican Party strikes me as so…

Just clarify for me: Could he be worse than Palin?

I’m still thinking about this.

Whether you would prefer your ship hijacked by someone who only pretended to know how to steer her or by someone who knows exactly how to steer her definitively into the hands of the highest-bidding pirates depends on how much faith you have in the rest of the crew’s willingness to mutiny when circumstances demand it.

This is my way of saying probably. Luckily it will never happen.

That’s an interesting distinction. If you’ll allow me to stick words in your mouth, it sounds like he’s competent, but ideologically reprehensible. But as a libtard, wouldn’t you describe any principled republican that way? Then the question just comes down to whether or not the principles he follows are actually ideologically consistent with the voters. That seems not to be the case for most republican politicians. And seriously, I know republicans (non-politicians) I respect. They aren’t giant redneck, racist hypocrites. How do they manage to find the most hypocritical people to fill their tickets? More importantly, how do they get re-elected? I think I may underestimate the crazy constituency.
